As I promised in my last letter to YOU, the soup is now DONE!


I have compiled together the necessary information to help you study for a Bachelor or Master Degree in the UK with your OND or HND certificate.


In this LETTER TO YOU, I will share the list of schools in the UK that accept HND certificates and the programs you can apply for in the school.


Before I start just a brief explanation about the HND and UK.


As you may have heard or know that Nigeria follows the education system of the UK being a Colonial Country. However, the UK changed their education system in 1992 which made Polytechnics to become a "new university". With this change, the Polytechnics awarded their own degree to their students. Nigeria on the other hand kept to the education system till date.


HND has been a major issue for students in Nigeria and outside the country. In many organizations today, HND is not recognized nor accepted, the ones that accept HND do not pay well. 


One may ask why students still go for HND and not BSc?


Majority of the students also prefer BSc. to HND, however, there are major factors against them. One of which is the limited number of students that can receive admission into University per session (per year). Rather than staying at home, students have to consider the other option which is Polytechnic. There are other factors, but I will not be going further since this is not what my letter is on.


Back to the article, listed below are some of the universities in the UK that were formally Polytechnic. Record shows that most of these universities accept HND while some accepts ND for their programme. However, there are ways and processes to follow.


Anglia Ruskin University, formerly Anglia Polytechnic (located in Cambridge and Chelmsford)

Birmingham City University, formerly Birmingham Polytechnic

University of Brighton, formerly Brighton Polytechnic

Bournemouth University, formerly Bournemouth Polytechnic

University of Central Lancashire, formerly Lancashire Polytechnic and before that Preston Polytechnic (until 1984)

City, University of London, formerly Northampton Polytechnic Institute

Coventry University, formerly Coventry Polytechnic and Lanchester Polytechnic

De Montfort University Leicester, formerly Leicester Polytechnic

University of East London, formerly North East London Polytechnic and Polytechnic of East London

University of Greenwich, formerly Woolwich Polytechnic

University of Hertfordshire, formerly Hatfield Polytechnic

University of Huddersfield, formerly Huddersfield Polytechnic

Kingston University, formerly Kingston Polytechnic

Below are the possible options for you with your OND or HND certificate.


For OND Holder

With your OND,

  • You can apply for a direct entry into second year (200l).
  • You can apply for a direct entry into third year (300l). This is possible when you have 5 or more years of experience.


For HND holder

  • You apply for a Top Up degree.
  • You apply for a Pre-master degree.
  • You apply for a foundation course/BSc.
  • You apply by sending the school an email explaining why you should be considered for a master program with your HND certificate. I think this works better if you have a 2.1 or distinction or when you have up to 7 -10 years of experience. But you may try your luck. "Never say Never".

Now, each of these schools have their requirements and how you can apply for their Pre-master or Top up degree. I will advise you to go through the school website for the requirement and how to apply.


Meanwhile, from my inquiry and discussion with friends, you can study any of the below master's programme in some of these schools when you have more than five (5) years working experience. To me I think you could apply to any of the Polytechnics turned University schools in the UK.

MSc. in Business management
MSc. Management 
MSc. International Business
MSc. International Business with human resources management




You can send them an email or go ahead and apply to any of these Masters with your HND. Since there is no application fee involved, the worst thing that could happen is your application is rejected.

However, when applying, ensure your SOP is well structured, well written and you have a good years of experience (I will discuss SOP in my next Letter).


So, instead of giving up on your dream to study in the UK because you have OND or HND, you can apply to any of the above schools.
